Every Struggle Is An Ecological Struggle:  Towards A Radical Arts Practice Through Ekphrasis

  • What can we learn from Beyonce, a mushroom, the human body, and an art exhibition?  How do we "read the world" and learn to write alongside it?  In this workshop, artists and writers are invited to radically imagine a new arts activism that draws on multiple ways of knowing, lineages, histories, and explorations interrelationship between the natural world and an artistic expression of balance and connection.  Together we will explore ekphrasis, writing in response to art, in relationship to works of art that help illuminate the relationship between environmental politics, anthropocentric thinking, and racialized experience.

    Saturday, December 7 and Sunday, December 8, 2024 // 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. ET

This workshop is held online via Zoom. It will be recorded and available to participants for up to a month after its conclusion. You are welcome to sign up even if you can’t attend live to receive the recording.

Rewilding Our Writing, Rewilding Our Selves: A Workshop with Langston Kahn

  • If we go back far enough, all of our Ancestors knew that we were each land spirits, not separate from the Earth, but intimately, deliciously of it. Then colonization and scientific materialism taught us differently. In this two day playshop we will work with the wild chaotic forces of the sacred elements — Air, Earth, Fire and Water — and the land where we each live to undomesticate our writing and ourselves. One of the etymological roots of wild is self-willed, true to essence. We will engage generative writing prompts, somatic body-based practices, visualizations and animist spiritual technologies to breathe the wilderness of our essential nature back into our writing. We will come back into conversation with the Earth that is always trying to sing truth through us and remind us who we are at the root.

    Saturday, December 14 and Sunday, December 15, 2024 // 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. ET

This workshop is held online via Zoom. It will be recorded and available to participants for up to a month after its conclusion. You are welcome to sign up even if you can’t attend live to receive the recording.

  • Langston Kahn is a healer, teacher and writer specializing in radical human transformation, ancestral healing and the restoration of an authentic relationship with our emotions and the more-than-human world. He stands firmly at the crossroads, his practice informed by somatic modalities, contemporary shamanic traditions, initiations into traditions of the African Diaspora and his helping spirits and ancestors weaving it all together. He is the author of Deep Liberation: Shamanic Teachings for Reclaiming Wholeness in a Culture of Trauma published by North Atlantic Books. He is a teacher and co-leader of the Cycle Community, a collective of people striving to live in alignment with ancient animist principles and applying them in service of personal and collective liberation.

  • Tuition for this offering is $100.00. There are one full and four partial ($50.00) scholarships available. Scholarships are held through a random lottery. Please email Info@RootsWoundsWords.org at least one week before the workshop's start to request a scholarship.

Dreamscape of the Inner Altar with Stephanie Adams-Santos

  • Through a blend of guided dreamwork/meditation and writing prompts, we will create a mythopoetic space for receiving sacred imagery from the depths of the psyche. By exploring the concept of an interior altar, we’ll use active imagination to connect with unconscious symbols, dreams, and archetypes. This process serves as a pathway to delve more deeply into our own creative material, inviting us to shape the mythic and speculative stories that emerge from within. Drawing from folklore, mythology, fairytales, sci-fi, and fantasy, we’ll give voice and dimension to the mythos of inner life.

    Saturday, December 21 and Sunday, December 22, 2024 // 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. ET

This workshop is held online via Zoom. It will be recorded and available to participants for up to a month after its conclusion. You are welcome to sign up even if you can’t attend live to receive the recording.

  • Influenced by a childhood spent between Oregon and Guatemala, the art and writing of Stephanie Adams-Santos explore the ancestral, primal, and mythological forces that shape inner life. They are the author of several full-length poetry collections and chapbooks, including DREAM OF XIBALBA (selected by Jericho Brown as winner of the 2021 Orison Poetry Prize; finalist for a 2024 Oregon Book Award and Lambda Literary Award) and SWARM QUEEN'S CROWN (finalist for a 2016 Lambda Literary Award). In addition to their literary work, Stephanie has written for television, radio, film, and is creating an original tarot deck that blends poetry, animism, and ancestral magic.

PAST WORKSHOPS

The Arc of the Romance Story: A Workshop with Amber Flame

  • The Arc of the Romance Story will be conducted over two sessions, in which students will engage in critical analysis of romance fiction to learn the rules of the form and experiment with how they bend. Stories of longing, love, and desire form foundational threads in much of our storytelling and media; when done well these stories generate hope, joy, imagination and creativity. Romance, then, can become a place of healing. We'll look at and discuss examples of these transformational stories, both in traditional romance fiction and in literary work outside the genre. Students will leave with their own maps for writing a romance story and the first draft of a short fictional piece.

    Thursdays, October 10 and 24, 2024 // 7:00 - 10:00 p.m. ET

  • Amber Flame is deputy publisher and cofounder at Generous Press. She is a multi-genre writer, educator, and arts administrator serving as program director for Hedgebrook. Flame is the author of the poetry collections Ordinary Cruelty and apocrifa.

The Flash & The Furious: A Workshop in Flash Nonfiction with Angelique Stevens

  • "The Flash and the Furious" is your fast lane to mastering the art of brevity and lyrical possibility. In this workshop, we’ll deconstruct the flash form, its arc turned acute angle, its reliance on conciseness, imagery, symbolism, and fire. We’ll look at the elements of craft that differentiate this short form from longer nonfiction forms. We’ll critically read some flash pieces together and use that as a grounding point for understanding what works well in shorter pieces. Finally, we’ll do some writing exercises to get you generating your own flash pieces.

    Sunday, November 3, 2024 // 11:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. ET

This workshop is held online via Zoom. It will be recorded and available to participants for up to a month after its conclusion. You are welcome to sign up even if you can’t attend live to receive the recording.

  • Angelique Stevens’ writing can be found in Best American Essays, Granta, LitHub. She has received support from Bread Loaf, Tin House, Kenyon Review, and Sewanee. She is working on an essay collection about poverty and the myth of the American dream.

  • Tuition for this offering is $50.00. There are one full and four partial ($25.00) scholarships available. Scholarships are held through a random lottery. Please email Info@RootsWoundsWords.org at least one week before the workshop's start to request a scholarship.

Writing (M)other: Examining Maternal Scripts In Life and Beyond with Ambreia Meadows-Fernandez

  • “How can I mother others, while still mothering myself?” In this workshop, we’ll demystify motherhood by looking at the internal, familial, and systemic perspectives that shape motherhood through discussion and craft. We will read excerpts from essays, memoirs, and other nonfiction works to witness how mothers occupy a hyper-visible yet invisible space, especially those not exclusively while Black. In addition to ample discussion, we’ll explore writing prompts that ask us vital questions about how we show up as mothers and preserve a sense of self. Participants find support in expanding their discussion of motherhood on the page by developing their own personal narratives of motherhood and exploring those of other maternal figures in their lives.

This class is mother-writer encouraged but not exclusive.

    Saturdays, November 9 and 16, 2024 // 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. ET

This workshop is held online via Zoom. It will be recorded and available to participants for up to a month after its conclusion. You are welcome to sign up even if you can’t attend live to receive the recording.

The Fragmented Essay: A Workshop with noam keim

  • How can we tell our stories without telling too much? How do we, as writers of color, fill in the gaps of our existence and traumas on the page? In a world that wants us to show how we bleed and consume our pain, how do we reclaim our dignity and agency in the act of writing the essay?

Over the course of two sessions, we will learn about the radical potential of fragmentation via critical readings of essays and we will discuss the ways we can tell our truths via silence and shadows.

We will meander outside of linear timelines and shape narratives that engage our readers with the help of images and metaphors.

Through a mix of craft discussions, somatic practices and generative writing exercises, we will draft essays that expand our sense of what can be done on the page.

    Tuesday, October 15 and Thursday, October 17, 2024 // 7:00 - 10:00 p.m. ET

This workshop is held online via Zoom. It will be recorded and available to participants for up to a month after its conclusion. You are welcome to sign up even if you can’t attend live to receive the recording.
